Canadian common sense
Smith in real life is sort of like duct tape — he has many talents. The 64-year-old Toronto-born family man has worked as a letter carrier, lab technician, steamfitter and elementary school teacher.
These days, he appears wire duct across North America as chief pitchman for 3M Scotch Duct Tape. Let’s not confuse duct tape with Duck Tape; the latter is a brand name by ShurTech Brands LLC. Smith even holds a doctorate in duct tape from Washburn University in Topeka, Kan.
He still wears his red and cable duct green suspenders, fishing hat and wiring duct flannel shirt at appearances, including the one at Rylee’s Ace, which coincided with a stage appearance that evening in Grand Rapids.
Though he looks the same in person as on the show, what you don’t get is the same gruff voice he uses in the show. In fact, he sounded and behaved quite normal, other than the quirky trademark get-up.
