cable management

RCCN supplied to a Birmingham hospital by cable management specialist Marshall-Tufflex includes silver ion antimicrobial protection in its PVC-U material.

The material formulation aims to help prevent infection cable duct, within the refurbished neonatal unit at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, which treats more than 800 premature and sick babies every year.

The bulk incorporation of the silver ion additive means that dangerous bacteria such as MRSA, E. coli and salmonella are neutralised or killed, even under normal wear and tear to the trunking, such as scratching or knocking.

Prompted by the need for modernisation and an increasing demand for specialist baby care within the region, the £7m combined refurbishment and new-build project has increased the hospital’s neonatal capacity from 30 to 50 cots, 20 of which cable channels are for intensive care.

The hospital has a dedicated and proactive infection control team. “This type of antimicrobial [measure] is a bonus to us,” said Warren Hubbard, Head of Estates, Birmingham Women’s Hospital.
